Environmental Mission
We're turning our design expertise on ourselves, taking steps to become more efficient, cut our waste, utilize responsible materials, and protect the broader world that is our home. As a company and as individuals, we're committed to running our business in a way that's not about trends or marketing, but principles that we call on to guide what we do.
These have led us to make choices that protect natural resources and support local communities throughout the world. We're also making changes here at home. From recycling in our offices to changing our shipping methods to use smaller boxes and conserve fuel, we're working to be mindful of each transaction. The global reach of our business — from partnering with artisans in India to craftsmen in Brazil — gives us more opportunity to create change. In Indonesia, one of our furniture partners recently celebrated the planting of the one millionth tree on its mahogany plantation. We choose such responsible sources and partners to do our part to try to protect and even restore critical ecosystems and empower communities.

Catalogue
The care that we take in our catalogues starts with the paper we print them on. We're the first company in America to print all of our catalogues — for Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and PBteen — entirely on paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
FSC is a widely recognized non–profit devoted to protecting the world's forests, and it sets strict environmental, social and economic standards. While FSC–certified paper comes only from responsibly managed forests, we still try to use less of it. To make an even greater impact, we're moving more and more toward digital communications — like email, interactive online catalogues, smart phone apps and more — that don't use paper at all.

Products
We think beauty is much more than surface–deep. We work to source responsible materials that are healthy for you, your family and your home. We choose partners who are equally committed to making a positive social and environmental impact.
Most of our bedding contains at least 5% organic cotton fiber, and our newer textiles are 100% organic. That means we're working to reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, and we're also saving water. By adding 5% organic cotton to almost all our textiles, we're supporting the growing organic cotton movement by increasing demand, which will lead to an increase in availability. When you see the Oeko–Tex label, it means that our products have been screened under the world's most rigorous certification process ensuring that textiles are free of the chemicals you may worry about.
We're also committed to ensuring the responsible harvesting of the wood used in our furniture. We're working to carefully monitor where our wood comes from, and we're moving toward using wood that's certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which establishes strict social, environmental and economic standards for managing and protecting the world's forests.

Stores
We're challenging ourselves to look at how we do things, and we're making changes throughout our stores. Our top priorities are to use less energy and reduce waste. Throughout the US, we're conducting lighting retrofits to reduce energy consumption. In our San Francisco stores, we're proud to have rolled out an aggressive recycling program.
The way we package our products has also changed. Last year, we said farewell to Styrofoam peanuts in favor of eco–friendly air pillows, and we've also reduced packing materials by using smaller, recycled boxes. That means fewer delivery trucks are on the road, which means less gas is used in delivery.
In our stores, we continue to grow our Refresh & Renew program, which is designed to support environmentally sound practices. Our gift boxes are now made from 100% recycled materials, are 100% recyclable, and are printed with eco–friendly water–based inks. Our everyday gift box eliminates the need for extra wrap, and our gift–registry wrapping paper is made from 30% post–consumer waste. Even the ribbon is now woven of cotton and linen instead of conventional polyester grosgrain. We also do little things that add up, like reusing shipping boxes for customer orders and printing in–store signs on FSC–certified paper.
We're pushing ourselves to look in every corner of our business for possible solutions, and we plan to share our progress as we move forward.
